Asbestos Removal in Chanhassen

A basement finish, a kitchen update or a new roof in Chanhassen can raise an asbestos question. Once the samples are back, we remove whatever tested positive, file the state notice and keep the disposal records for you.

Chanhassen is a young city in housing terms. About 6 in 10 of its homes went up in 1990 or later, and nearly 2 in every 10 before 1980.

Chanhassen homes

Only about 2,000 Chanhassen homes were built before 1980. The 1970s supplied close to 8 percent of today’s housing and the 1960s about 5 percent, while roughly 3 in 100 homes predate 1950. The median home was built in 1994.

Who lives here

Close to 9 in 10 homes are one-unit homes, and about 1 in 6 occupied homes is rented. Townhomes and apartment buildings share walls, so we plan containment and access with the owner or association.

Permits in Chanhassen

Demolition is on Chanhassen’s list of projects that need a building permit, and you apply online. The city’s building permits page doesn’t mention asbestos, so check with the city on what the permit requires and follow the state rules. Under MPCA guidance, asbestos must be out of a building at least two days before demolition.

Where the waste goes

Waste stays wet inside sealed, labeled bags and wrapped bundles. The load is hauled to a landfill that takes asbestos, with a manifest riding along.

Frequently asked questions

Do newer Chanhassen homes need asbestos testing?

Maybe not. Ask the builder or the architect for a letter saying no asbestos went into the house, because MDH accepts one instead of an inspection when the building dates from after October 1988. If you can’t get the letter, or the house is older, testing is how you find out.

Can a landlord remove asbestos without a license?

No. Minnesota gives landlords no exemption. The one exempt owner lives in the single-family house being worked on, and even that owner is strongly urged by MDH to use licensed work. A rented house, a duplex or an apartment building above the state limits needs a licensed contractor.

What does a licensed job look like?

MDH describes plastic over the work area, a three-chamber decontamination unit with a shower, a HEPA negative air machine, an airless sprayer keeping the material wet, air sample pumps and sealed bags.
