One room or a whole level
A bedroom ceiling and a full main floor follow the same steps, from covered floors and walls to negative air and wet scraping. A bigger area simply takes more plastic and more bags.

Your popcorn finish may hold asbestos, since MDH counts it among the ceiling materials that can. If the lab confirms it, we seal off that room, mist the texture and scrape it into sealed bags as we go. The drywaller or painter then comes back to a bare ceiling.
The four-unit exemption in Minnesota ended on July 1, 2021. When friable texture spans more than 6 square feet, the scraping goes to a licensed contractor. The sole exception is a homeowner living in a single-family house, and even then MDH strongly recommends a licensed contractor. Call us about ceilings in Eden Prairie, Shorewood or Chanhassen.

Paint can stop water from soaking into texture, and an old leak can loosen it. We check for both at the site visit and plan the wetting around the ceiling in front of us.
MDH’s list covers ceiling tiles as well. We sample them on their own, and positive tiles are taken down in whole pieces whenever they come away that way.
Popcorn that is intact and will not be touched can remain overhead. Recessed lights, a new ceiling fan or a sanding job put the decision back on the table.
A clear room lets the crew seal it quickly.
Before any plastic is hung, we take down or wrap the light fixtures, fans and smoke alarms. Furniture, rugs and whatever is on the walls should already be out of the room.
The room stays shut until the last air samples pass, so work out ahead of time where people will sleep or work while it is out of use.
Tell us which trade follows us and what the ceiling will get, whether a skim coat, fresh drywall or only paint. We leave the surface in the state that work needs.
